IMPROVING ADOLESCENT LITERACY:
RESULTS FROM THE WORK OF THE NATIONAL LITERACY PROJECT
2007-2011

This report presents the evidence of the positive impact on student achievement from three NLP projects: a
large urban district in Florida, a large urban district in Colorado, and a middle school in Maryland. The
evidence from these three projects clearly points to the efficacy of school administrators and teaching
colleagues working collaboratively using a field-tested process and tools for designing, implementing, and
monitoring literacy action plans. The five-stage literacy action process provides both a relational framework
that promotes the committed buy-in from teachers and administrators, as well as a vehicle for sustainability
over time and across schools.
