NLP works with districts as well as individual schools. The project design generally includes an assessment of district and/or school needs, help in building and supporting literacy leadership teams, and work to create a common vision for the literacy improvement effort.
Listed below are some of the past projects the NLP took part in. Since becoming a non-profit, NLP has also worked in several districts including the Amarillo School District in TX, Alachua School District in FL, and the Hearland Consortium in FL.
CESA 6 Project
Nancy Dean, Project Director
ndean@NationLiteracyProject.org
NLP, in cooperation with the CESA6 Literacy Center, is working to improve student
literacy in Wisconsin middle and high schools. Using a train-the-trainer model, NLP
guides the literacy teams from six schools as they assess school strengths and needs,
develop literacy action goals, and build a literacy action plan. Schools then implement
the plan, with guidanceand support from NLP. This project is directed by Nancy Dean
from NLP and Kathy Schmitt, from CESA6.
The CESA 6 (Cooperative Educational Services Agency) Project involves working with
five literacy teams from the northeast region of Wisconsin who came together in
August to access their schools, develop goals, and create an implementation map.
These teams came together again in October to integrate feedback from their
respective faculties and make plans for the full implementation of their literacy action
goals. The focus of the spring meeting will be on troubleshooting implementation and
revising each school's literacy action plan.
